The Camargue horse is an ancient breed on of white horses indigenous to the Camargue region of southern France. The breed is estimated to be at least 12,000 years old and has been managed and bred by generations of Gardians, the cowboys or keepers of the horse. We rose early to meet the Gardians at sunrise at the Rhone Delta. They ran the horses back and forth through the wet marshlands and allowed us to photograph the scene. The horses then came to greet us, curious about our camera gear. The synchronicity of the horses as they galloped through the marshlands was almost other worldly.
